General Assembly: Aftermath

It is hard to truly reflect upon the GA and ponder the future of the denomination. Without being fatalistic, there are just so many challenges to the PCUSA that lay before us. For instance, our basic polity is a challenge. Half of the commissioners to the GA are members of the laity, which is not a bad thing in itself. However, when you consider that even most of the pastors do not have a strong grasp on the events around us and the challenges facing us, then what is the chance that lay members of the denomination who do not deal with these challenges day in and day out, are going to be able to make the right decisions? These are the kinds of challenges that we are facing, they are spiritual and structural.

I ponder the spirituality of the denomination as I sat in committee meeting after committee meeting…
