Years ago in Williamstown, NJ I had an exchange with a contractor who I knew from the community who was not a church goer, not at the church I pastored nor anywhere else. It was near Christmas, so I greeted him with “Happy Holidays” to which he responded in a gruff “Merry Christmas” and then went on to say that he believed in putting “Christ back into Christmas.” And yes, this was about the time that those bumper stickers began to show up.
As I mentioned, he had never graced the doorway of the church for worship and did not attend other churches. So I found it interesting that he was that concerned about Christ being in Christmas, because I really did not consider him a Christian. Look, if you cannot even get yourself to church, any church, on Christmas, than I really do not think you can call yourself Christian.
