The young people of Discovery had a great night of fellowship on Saturday. Thanks to the Deacons for providing tacos from El Limon! While the adults had their own party at the church, we ate well, watched The BFG, played some charades, and made some impressive ice cream sundaes. Throughout the night, we took turns preparing the challah that was our offering for the Lord’s Table the next day. We are becoming quite adept at kneading and braiding and waiting patiently for our dough to rise.
The next morning we had an interesting discussion about the bread that we use in our celebration of the Lord’s Supper. We compared our Reformed understanding of the communion elements with the Catholic understanding of transubstantiation. In recognition of the fact that we use ordinary bread, common to our community, we ate one of our four loaves when it came out of the oven. Then we set apart three loaves for their special use as one of the communion elements. It is even more meaningful for us to be invited to share in the Lord’s Supper when we see our offering on the table.
