Reflections for the Fourth Day of Holy Week

A Thorn in the Flesh

On the fourth day of Holy Week, we now enter into the “holiest” of the days. Today is Maundy Thursday, the day in which we commemorate the Last Supper and the Arrest of Jesus. It is a similar journey, tonight we mark the Last Supper, tomorrow we experience the Crucifixion, Saturday we sit in Vigil and Sunday we rejoice. As I spent time with the readings for this day, the reading from Exodus that provides the warrant for the Passover meal, and John’s telling of Jesus’ washing of the disciples feet, I was drawn to the concept of the sacrificial lamb, and how John portray’s Jesus as the paschal lamb. I wanted to do a theological study and comparison of these events, so when I read them again, I was struck by the fact that neither actually get to the meal.
