A reflection for Good Friday
No one ever said scripture was easy to understand, it takes a lot of work and a lot of study and prayer and even with that, it is still not easy. The character of the Suffering Servant is one that scholars for years have tried to determine who he or they represent. I say “they” because it has not been determined whether the Suffering Servant represents the entirety of Israel, a remnant of Israel or an individual. So the question we have to ask ourselves is, how does this Suffering Servant relate to Jesus?
It is very clear that Jesus suffers much in the way described in Isaiah 52 and 53, but still we face the question does this passage relate to Jesus or not? Is there another person or group that Isaiah is referring to in this passage or does it refer to a messianic figure? As someone trained…
