A Thorn in the Flesh

Growing up, I was a real science fiction/fantasy fan. My bookshelf was littered with books from Frank Herbert’s Dune series and Stephen F. Donaldson’s Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever series. Later that grew into The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan and yes, George Martin’s Game of Thrones. To crack one of these books was to enter into a different world and reside for a bit. I would stay up to all hours reading the books as the house lay quiet and everyone was sleeping, the quiet letting me sink more into the book.

Perhaps this desire to engage and enter into an alternate reality was age reality, what teen does not want to escape his or her own skin? Or perhaps this sensation was exacerbated by the family living in a conservative Midwest community? Or maybe it was a combination of many factors. However, I do know, that even…
