The security and gratitude felt by David is the dignified security every human being aspires to have and feel. Our creation in the image of God is the theological and moral foundation for this weaving together of home and dignity as essential for human beings. this text can remind us that safe and affordable housing is necessary for human flourishing and dignity.

Reading Psalm 89: 1-4, 19-26
Immediately after the emphasis on the foreverness of the promise to David…the psalm reports that God has “now spurned and rejected him.” How can this be? What happened to God’s steadfast love? In fact, this is precisely what an imagined, but now deposed, Davidic descendant asks in vs 49…Psalm 89 provides no answer to this question; so it concludes Book III of the Psalter with a poignant reminder of the destruction of Jerusalem in 587 BCE, the subsequent Babylonian exile, and the fact that the Davidic monarchy was gone forever.

What virtues, qualities, commitments of life are seen as most valuable?…Paul is doing the same thing…This is his “last lecture,” the final doxology of his ministry. As Leander Keck notes, “The doxology gives glory to God for Paul’s lifework.” Paul is writing his epitaph, what he believes is the most valuable contribution he has made by his existence on earth.

In too many Protestant churches in particular, Mary’s faith is muted in preaching and storytelling. She is a bystander in the story of Jesus. In Luke-Acts, however, she is the narrative’s first faithful voice, and her witness continues in Acts 1:14, when Luke names her as faithful still, even after the cross, the resurrection, the ascension. In Luke’s telling, her faith and courage is no surprise. They were evident the moment she siad, “Yes”. They were sealed the moment she first sang.

In a world that diminishes so many people, I’m grateful for the boldness of the girl-child, Mary, standing at the cusp of everything in the presence of God’s own messenger and saying without inhibition, “Here I am. Here is all of me, coherent and whole, free and unfettered, ready and receptive, fearful and faithful. Exactly as you, oh God, have created me. Here I am.”
